About

Sam and his wife, Shellie, are area directors for Southeast Asia. They provide oversight and pastoral care for 118 missionaries living in an area that spans six countries. In addition, they also direct ICI Ministries in Manila, Philippines.

They were approved for service in Thailand in 1992 and arrived there in 1994. During their first term they worked alongside the Thai national fellowship to share the gospel in needy neighborhoods and preach in local churches. Eventually, they based their ministry in Udon Thani; located close to the Thailand/Laos border.

At that time the nation of Laos was a relatively new field for AGWM, and in 1998 the Bowdoins were named country coordinators for ministries taking place there. Opportunities for compassion ministry were abundant, and they were soon working to assist local schools and children’s homes located in mountain villages. They spearheaded efforts to build relationships within communities by providing coats, blankets, school supplies, and medical care for the children. They also worked to train pastors for an emerging network of underground churches. God used their efforts to forge a path that others could follow in establishing a presence in Laos.

While on itineration in 2008, their ministry took an unexpected turn when Sam was asked to become director of the Global Missions Center at Asia Pacific Theological Seminary. From the remote mountains of Laos, Sam and Shellie moved their family to the mountains of northern Philippines. Sam was soon involved in organizing missions training opportunities for APTS students and serving on the faculty.

Eventually, the Bowdoins transitioned to directing the printing and publishing ministries of ICI Ministries in Manila, as well as serving as field coordinators for the last seven years. Shellie assists in writing and consulting on various printed materials to assist Filipino churches in their outreach to children and women. Their publishing ministry has helped the gospel spread far beyond the Philippines to make an impact across the Asia Pacific region.

The Bowdoins are from the Peninsular Florida District. They have two grown children—Jay and Mary Kate.
