Matt and Marissa Barker were first called into missions in 2010 during a Missions Week at their home church early in their relationship. After they were married, they were appointed as Missionary Associates to Padova, Italy in 2014.  They worked alongside veteran missionary pastors of an International Church. Shortly after their arrival to Italy in 2015 they visited Marissa’s parents (who were missionaries) in Athens, Greece where the Lord put a burden in their heart for the many Arab refugees who were fleeing war. However, they both felt the Lord had not released them from their commitment in Padova, Italy at that particular time. After their 2 -year assignment was complete they eagerly jumped at the opportunity to study language and culture in the Middle East for a year.

In 2019 they were newly appointed to serve in Athens, Greece alongside, “Humanitarian Initiative Bridges”. This organization is primarily working with Syrian, Iraqi, and Kurdish refugees in Athens, Greece, meeting needs holistically. They aid physically with asylum assistance and offer food and clothing distribution. In addition to meeting physical needs, they are also able to meet the spiritual needs by ministering and discipling many who have never heard of Jesus before.

In 2020 during the season of lockdown the Lord opened a door and spoke to them about Pastoring the International Christian Fellowship Church (ICF Athens) while continuing to partner with Bridges Humanitarian initiative. They are currently learning the Greek language so they can effectively engage their neighbors around them.
